The Pentagon said Friday it would withdraw 5,000 troops from NATO-ally Germany in the next 6-12 months. Germany's defense minister said a drawdown was expected as he emphasized the countries' shared interests.
The U.S. military has tens of thousands of personnel in Germany, more than in any other foreign country but Japan. Their significance extends well beyond Europe.
