Your gaming monitor specs could be deceiving you

That's relatable if you have an el cheapo panel, but when you've spent a small fortune on what's meant to be kickass visuals, that kind of performance is uncool.

We reviewers can put a finger on the best gaming monitors to buy and the ones to avoid, but the elephant in the room remains why some premium monitors with excellent specs have sub-par performance in the first place.

Why some gaming monitors fall short The main problem as I see it is that manufacturers' claims about performance specs are often wrong or misleading.

I won't use a broad brush to paint all manufacturers in the same light, or indeed all products within a manufacturer's range, but there are plenty of individual products out there that I can point to.

Any gaming monitor spec can turn out to be vastly different from what a manufacturer has said, but two of the biggest offenders right off the bat are HDR and contrast ratio.

The many guises of HDR HDR comes under many guises. For example, "Nebula HDR" and "Quantum HDR" are two names manufacturers have given to monitors to sell the idea that they are high peak brightness and high contrast-ratio displays. Yet these are essentially made-up names designed to pivot off of the current standard for HDR known as VESA HDR certification.

The Last of Us season 2 premieres on HBO and Max on April 13
The second season of The Last of Us now has a firm premiere date. HBO has announced that its adaptation of Naughty Dog's games will hit the network and Max on April 13. "Five years after the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie are drawn into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind," HBO said in a press release. Ominous!

Warner Bros. Discovery had already confirmed that the latest batch of episodes would arrive this April, in large part to make sure that the season is eligible for next year's Primetime Emmy Awards. Given that the third season of The White Lotus premiered this week, a mid-April start date makes sense for TLOU. There are only seven episodes this time around in any case, and they'll all air before the Emmy eligibility window closes on May 31.

The second season of the series is based on The Last of Us Part 2, but it won't take us through all of the events of the second game. It'll take at least two seasons to retell the story of that terrific, if overly lengthy misery simulator.

In the meantime, if you haven't played the sequel yet, you'll soon be able to do just that on PC. The Last of Us Part II Remastered will hit Steam and the Epic Games S

Researchers build a scary Mac attack using AI and sound
A UK research team based at Durham University has identified an exploit that could allow attackers to figure out what you type on your MacBook Pro — based on the sound each keyboard tap makes.

These kinds of attacks aren't particularly new. The researchers found research dating back to the 1950s into using acoustics to identify what people write. They also note that the first paper detailing use of such an attack surface was written for the US National Security Agency (NSA) in 1972, prompting speculation such attacks may already be in place.

"(The) governmental origin of AS- CAs creates speculation that such an attack may already be possible on modern devices, but remains classified," the researchers wrote.
