Seven of the eight children killed were the shooter's own. Two other people were gravely wounded. The gunman, who was struggling with mental health problems, died in a confrontation with police.

The children were formally identified by their mothers, according to a news release from the Caddo Parish Coroner's Office. All eight -- five girls and three boys -- were killed in 31-year-old Shamar Elkins' rampage.

The suspect died after a police pursuit, and the victims — who ranged in age from 1 to about 14 years old — included children related to the gunman, said Shreveport Police Department spokesperson Chris Bordelon.
