Microsoft Edge will AI summarize your browsing activity for $20/mo

But there's a catch with this feature: it's only available if you have a Copilot Pro subscription, which costs $20 per month. The subscription also provides AI capabilities in other Microsoft apps such as Word, PowerPoint, Paint, and Notepad. (Yup, those last two actually have AI features.)

When Journeys is activated, an AI model analyzes your browsing activity. Microsoft emphasizes that the data is stored locally on your device and is not used for training AI models or targeted advertising. Instead, Edge uses small language models such as Phi-4 and Phi-mini, which allow the calculations to take place directly on your computer.

The Journeys feature is not yet available in the stable version of Edge, and as of this writing can only be enabled via Edge Canary. It's currently unclear when Journeys will be made widely available.

Google's mysterious Gemini smart speaker: What we know, and don't know

Was it a leak? Not really. A "leaked" product is one that's been mistakenly revealed, whereas the speaker we saw during Google's Pixel event got a clear supporting role, with F1 driver Lando Norris cheerfully chatting with the device. Google meant for us to notice the new and unannounced smart speaker.

So, what do we know about this little gray (or porcelain?) speaker? Here's a quick breakdown.

Google's new Gemini speaker: What we know for sure  It exists  That may sound obvious, but so often with rumored or "leaked" new products, we're in the land of pure conjecture. In this case (and as I just mentioned), Google clearly intended for us to notice its new speaker.

In other words, it's the real deal. A new Google smart speaker is happening.

It's got Gemini inside  F1's Lando Norris was chatting with Google's new speaker during a demonstration of Gemini Live, a Gemini mode where you can have freewheeling conversations with the AI model about any subject you want.

That's all in the way of saying this new Google speaker runs on Gemini, and besides its Gemini Live capabilities, it's virtually certain to boast

Watch: A creative ‘modder' built a handmade cardboard PC

Earlier this month, a Reddit poster shared a two-minute video of a PC build… or at least an approximation of one, where almost every single component is lovingly simulated with hand-cut cardboard. The case is cardboard, the motherboard is cardboard, the graphics card is cardboard, even the (working!) CPU fan is cardboard. There are a few metal screws and brackets, and I'm guessing the power supply is only covered in cardboard, as that cardboard fan really spins and there are some actual RGB elements on the cardboard RAM.

The attention to detail is staggering. I'm not sure who made the original video (it may be the Reddit poster spotted by UFD Tech), but I was blown away when I saw that the cardboard CPU is held into its socket with a little tension bar. The cardboard hard drive—yes, in addition to the SSD, a hard drive that's realistically installed into its own

Microsoft's ‘My Apps' tab brings other storefronts to handheld PCs

The "My Apps" tab within the Xbox PC app allows gamers to load applications outside of the Xbox ecosystem, as defined by the Microsoft Store and Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft didn't announce any partners, but an example screenshot on Microsoft's announcement shows Battle.net as well as the GOG Store and Microsoft Edge.

Over the past few months, Microsoft has begun testing new ways for gamers to have access beyond the Xbox and Game Pass ecosystems. In June, the company began testing an aggregated game library, where Xbox Insiders could launch games from Battle.net "and other leading storefronts" within the Xbox PC app. In July, Microsoft added the ability to stream over 250 games beyond the Game Pass library without the need for installing them.

This most recent announcement appears to tweak the aggregated library to allow users to download the storefront apps themselves, as well as a curated selection of apps.

"As an Insider, you will initially have access to a tailored selection of apps that you can view and download, and we will expand support to additional apps over time," Microsoft said.

Like other announcements, Microsoft is customizing this new "My Apps" page to the Asus ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X, which

Here's how much Microsoft devs earn, according to leaked documents

But how much do you actually earn as a Microsoft employee? This question is particularly interesting for developers and managers, as such positions at top companies are in high demand. And as a user, you might also wonder what a Windows developer earns these days.

How much do Microsoft devs earn? Business Insider recently obtained a leaked internal Microsoft document that answers this question. In it, 850 employees provided information on their own earnings at Microsoft, and the data allows for different levels to be compared with each other.

Compensation at Microsoft comprises the following: a base annual salary, a cash bonus, a percentage bonus (presumably based on targets achieved), and a stock award (which is based on the current company value and can therefore fluctuate greatly).

This results in the following salary range for developers:

Level Basic salary Cash bonus Bonus percentage Stock bonus59$120,800 - $124,000$3,000 - $19,3008-14%$7,000 - $19,300

2.5 billion Gmail users at risk after Google database hack

Google has confirmed the attacks and states that general data like customer and company names were leaked, but not passwords. The resulting data leak means that users of Google services—including Gmail and Google Cloud—are now at risk of falling victim to phishing attempts.

How the phishing attacks work Initial reports of attempted attacks have already been seen on Reddit, which are likely related to the data leak. Users describe how alleged Google employees have contacted them by phone to inform them of a security breach in their accounts.

In these scam attempts, attackers are trying to take over Gmail accounts by triggering alleged "account resets" and then intercepting passwords to subsequently lock out the account holders. Another attack method involves "dangling buckets" (i.e., outdated access addresses) to steal data from or inje

After land abandonment, should we tend nature or set it free?
Ecologist Gergana Daskalova moved back to the small Bulgarian town of her childhood. It's a place many people have abandoned — and that's the very reason she returned. At the same time as land is being cleared around the world to make room for agriculture, elsewhere farmland is being abandoned for nature to reclaim. But what happens when people let the land return to nature? This episode, science reporter Dan Charles explains why abandoned land has conservationists and researchers asking: If we love nature, do we tend it or set it free?

Read more of Dan's reporting for Science Magazine and NPR.
