President-elect Donald Trump has named Elon Musk as the leader of a new "Department of Government Efficiency," that will "dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies." The Tesla CEO and owner of X will spearhead the effort along with former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, Trump announced in a statement on Truth Social.
The scope of the role isn't exactly clear. Trump's press release said that "the Department of Government Efficiency will provide advice and guidance from outside of Government, and will partner with the White House and Office of Management & Budget to drive large scale structural reform, and create an entrepreneurial approach to Government never seen before." It also stated that "their work will conclude no later than July 4, 2026."

Musk shared the news on X, but didn't indicate how the role might impact his obligations at his various other companies. Musk, who poured millions of dollars into Super Pac boosting Trump's campaign, has

Apple is planning to launch an AI-powered smart home display as soon as March 2025, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The display will measure in at approximately six inches, and while it is similar to an iPad, it is square rather than rectangular and it has thick bezels around the edges. There is a camera at the top front so that it can be used for FaceTime, plus there are internal speakers for playing music and a built-in rechargeable battery.

If you use Chrome on your iPhone, you're about to see some features sliding over from the Android version. Google Lens will let you add text to your image searches, and you can save files and pictures directly to Google Drive and Photos. You can get "Shopping Insights" for products you're browsing.
Chrome for iOS now lets you add words to your Google Lens visual searches, allowing you to add nuance to your query or "perform more complex and specific searches," as Chrome Product Manager Katia Muradyan wrote in a blog post. After activating Lens by tapping the camera icon in the Chrome search bar, you can ask questions about the object you're snapping a pic of, and it will produce corresponding results. Google says AI Overviews will also appear for some of these search results.
The feature shares some common ground with an Apple Intelligence feature for iPhone 16 owners in iOS 18.2, which is currently in beta. Visual Intelligence lets you point your camera at something and get info about it, including asking ChatGPT questions about it or searching for it on Google.

The classic Outlook app is also on track to being deprecated, but on a longer timeline. In recent months, Microsoft has repeatedly issued pop-ups informing users that they should switch to the new Outlook, but it wasn't clear how long the grace period would be for those who weren't ready to make the switch. Now there's finally some clarity.
What is the deadline?
The Windows Mail, Calendar, and People apps will no longer be supported come December 31, 2024. You'll still be able to open the apps, but you won't be able to do certain things like send and receive email or create appointments in your schedule.
The classic Outlook app is on a different, more progressive migration timeline, as explained in this support document. We're currently in the phase where the new Outlook app is publicly available but still on an opt-in basis. We'll soon move into the on-by-default, opt-out-basis phase. Then, in the phase after that, classic Outlook will no longer be available.
What you can do right now
If you're still using Windows Mail, Calendar, People, or classic Outlook, you'll start receiving new pop-ups (if you haven'

Massachusetts Air National Guard member Jack Teixeira received a 15-year sentence in federal prison for leaking classified military documents on Discord in a Boston federal court, according to The Washington Post.
Teixeira appeared before the court earlier today and asked the judge for leniency. He also issued a statement apologizing for "all of the harm that I've caused, to my friends, family and those overseas."
Defense attorney Michael Bachrach also claimed that Teixeira was subjected to bullying in high school and his military unit as an adjudicating factor for his actions. Judge Indira Talwani didn't buy the defense's bullying claims stating that the Air Force has already disciplined 15 other members connected to Teixeira for not taking more actions "that might have stopped him from doing this."
Teixeira shared classified military documents as far back as late 2022 on a Discord server dedicated to the pixelated sandbox game Minecraft. The leak included information about the Ukrainian and Russian troop movements and military equipment used in the war in Ukraine and Russia's attempts to obtain more weapons from Egypt and Turkey. The documents eventually found their way to other Discord servers as well as 4chan and Telegram.
FBI officials arrested Teixeira at his home in April of last year. Teixeira originally agreed to a plea deal with federal prosecutors in March that included a 16-year prison sentence for pleading guilty to six counts of willful retention and transmission of national defense information and violating the Espionage Act. If he

Well, if that describes you, Microsoft wants you to know that they're listening and they care. According to Windows Latest, Microsoft is reportedly working on adding the emoji panel to the taskbar, granting immediate access to emojis no matter what you're doing.
Although there's already a keyboard shortcut for accessing the emoji panel — simply press Windows key Period or Windows key Semicolon — it's clear that not everyone is aware of it. After all, who can really remember the hundreds of keypress combinations that exist?
Microsoft hasn't officially confirmed the move to add the emoji panel to the taskbar, so there's no word on when this change is going to come. But the UI settings for it appear to exist in Windows 11 based on some leaked strings that indicate an "Emojis and more" taskbar button.

In the December 2024 issue of the International Journal of Epidemiology, a team of researchers published a study with data from over 83,000 participants in the United Kingdom who had mixed both sitting and standing for work. They found that "stationary time" increased circulatory system disease risk.
Sitting for more than 10 hours a day across an extended period of time was associated with a 13 percent increase in heart problems over seven years and 26 percent greater prevalence of circulatory disorders. The longer participants remained stationary, the greater the risk (as measured by an increased average heart rate). Hence the push to get people to periodically stand at a desk instead of sitting in a chair.
The more concerning data is that time spent standing for the same stationary tasks didn't significantly reduce those risks. In fact, standing still for hours and hours as an alternative to sitting came with measurably higher risks for orthostatic circulatory diseases, including "orthostatic hypotension, varicose vein, chronic venous insufficiency, and venous ulcers." But, again, this isn't shocking — doctors have known that standing still for long hours for work, repeated across weeks, months, and years, has some predictably bad outcomes.
The report is pretty dense, academically. (The Washington Post has

While GeForce Experience will still work if you have it installed, it's no longer being bundled with Nvidia's frequent GPU updates, and it probably won't be long before the program is put out to pasture.
If you haven't tried it, the all-in-one Nvidia App is pretty good. It combines features from GeForce Experience and the seldom-used Nvidia Control Panel into a unified interface, including driver updates, system-wide and per-game graphics settings, monitor and video tweaks, and Nvidia's promotional goodies (like some free in-game currency and goodies for Throne and Liberty).
It doesn't do everything, though. More advanced tools, like GeForce Now game streaming and Nvidia Broadcast, are linked and open in separate windows. And there are still a few small tools that aren't in the UI yet, as Nvidia admits in its announcement post, like Nvidia Surround that can span virtual spaces across multiple monitors for playing games on two or three displays at once.
Like GeForce Experience before it, the Nvidia App isn't strictly necessary, and you can install drivers for your GeForce GPU using a separate, standalone process on both laptops and desktops. And Nvidia also gives you the option of running the App and downloading drivers without logging into an account, which is something I appreciate. Gotta keep that taskbar notification area lean!

Apple has returned to using two 128GB storage chips in the new Mac mini with 256GB of storage, according to a partial teardown video shared on social media today. This means the base-model Mac mini with the M4 chip will not have significantly slower SSD speeds compared to higher-end configurations of the computer with 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB of storage, as multiple NAND chips allows for faster SSD read and write speeds.

Microsoft's October AI roadmap included tweaks to Paint, Notepad, and Search. Microsoft Recall was expected soon, too. Recall, of course, has been delayed again until December, as Microsoft works to ensure it's secure and private.
For now, three new features are debuting in the Canary and Dev Channels within Windows 11: AI rewriting within Notepad, plus Generative Fill and Generative Erase within Microsoft Paint.
Generative Erase is already within the Photos app, and the addition to Paint looks very similar. In Paint, you can highlight a section of the image and Paint will "erase" it, intelligently filling in the background. I find this especially useful in Photos, in case I need to touch up and remove a bit of dust. (In general, however, I leave images untouched for authenticity's sake.)
