Gabrielle Union knows the value of a sturdy support system. But she also knows that not everyone has one.
She made this point at Monday night's 11th Annual Night of Opportunity Gala held in New York City for The Opportunity Network, a nonprofit that works with students from historically and systematically underrepresented communities achieve their college and career goals.
Union, 45, was an honoree at the event, and in her acceptance speech, she spoke about expanding the idea of what a support system can be. She explained that she learned the hard way that "your people" are not always who you thought they would be. She referenced the time she was raped as a sophomore in college.
"When I was raped at gunpoint, one of the most lonely and debilitating experiences of my life, I had to redefine what it meant to be a part of a community because my ‘people' didn't have a ton of experience with rape survivors," the Being Mary Jane star and producer said to Cipriani's packed but silent dining room. "So I had to expand my idea of what and who my people were. I needed a different kind of support. I needed different opportunities, opportunities to heal and then the ability to want to continue living."
The summer before starting her sophomore year of college at UCLA, the actress was raped at gunpoint by a stranger in the Payless store where she worked.

But that wasn't the first time she realized she needed "different" opportunities.
"When I was at UCLA, a lot of the kids I was at school with, their parents got them internships and their parents had jobs lined up for them or they took over the family business," she explained to PEOPLE. "I don'

One of the three woman who survived being raped and held captive for more than a decade in a Cleveland home announced on Tuesday that she is married.
Michelle Knight made the announcement to Dr. Phil McGraw on an episode of Dr. Phil schedule to air on April 24.
"I've got really good news for you," she told the talk-show host while smiling broadly. "I'm married!"
Knight — who has since changed her name to Lillian Rose Lee — was kidnapped by Ariel Castro in August 2002, when she was 20, along with Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus.
The trio escaped from Castro's home on May 6, 2013. Since then, the women have gone their separate ways while they heal and get reacquainted with the lives they once led.

A California woman reportedly faces the possibility of life in prison after jurors convicted her last week of murdering a homeless man in 2016 when she drunkenly struck him with her car — then continued down the road for more than a mile with his dead body in the seat next to her.
Esteysi "Stacy" Sanchez, 31, will be sentenced on May 31 to 15 years to life behind bars in the death of 69-year-old Jack Ray Tenhulzen, the San Diego Tribune reports.
Sanchez was found guilty on Friday of second-degree murder as well as gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and hit and run.
Tenhulzen was mowed down along Mission Avenue in San Diego County early on June 27, 2016, as he walked on the sidewalk, according to the Tribune.
While Tenhulzen died immediately in the collision — his body smashed through the passenger side of the windshield — Sanchez did not stop driving.
Little more than a mile later, she parked her vehicle a block from her home and walked the rest of the way, according to the Tribune.
Jurors reportedly took a day to reach their verdict.
While Sanchez had no prior drunk-driving infractions, according to local TV station KSWB, prosecutors argued she committed murder given that evidence showed friends warned her not to drive home, according to the Tribune.
San Diego Deputy District Attorney Robert Bruce was happy jurors agreed.

James Franco's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame got an unwelcome amendment this week.
The actor's placard, which he was honored with in 2013, was defamed with the word "douche" written in capital letters with a red marker. It's unclear who graffitied the star.
The vandalism comes after Franco was accused of sexual misconduct by several woman. His name was first brought into the national discussion of sexual harassment in January after he wore a Time's Up pin at the 2018 Golden Globe Awards, where he won a trophy for his role in The Disaster Artist.
In an article published in the Los Angeles Times days later, five women accused the actor of abusing his power as an acting teacher and mentor in a sexually exploitative manner.
Two students claimed the actor would often become angry on set when they would refuse to film topless, while another former acting student at the film school Franco founded said he once removed safety guards while filming an oral sex scene on the set of the 2015 film The Long Home.
Additionally, actress Violet Paley recounted her previous social media claims that Franco exposed himself and tried to pressure her into oral sex. Though she said they had a consensual relationship, Paley said, "that time wasn't consensual." She also alleged that he t

Lindsey Buckingham, the guitar virtuoso whose prolific songwriting and precision fretwork helped launch Fleetwood Mac into the rock stratosphere as one of the best-selling acts in history, is reportedly out of the group. Rolling Stone and Variety confirmed the departure Monday afternoon, saying that the 68-year-old was, in fact, fired.
Representatives for the band did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.
The news comes on the eve of a planned global tour for Fleetwood Mac. TMZ reports that, Mike Campbell — formerly of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers — and Neil Finn will handle guitar duties on the trek. "Lindsey Buckingham will not be performing with the band on this tour," a source close to Fleetwood Mac told the outlet in a statement. "The band wishes Lindsey all the best."
Rolling Stone received a statement from Mick Fleetwood, the group's co-namesake and drummer, expanding on the change. "Fleetwood Mac has always been about an amazing collection of songs that are performed with a unique blend of talents," drummer and founding member Mick Fleetwood told the publication. "We jammed with Mike and Neil and the chemistry really worked and let the band realize that this is the right combination to go forward with in Fleetwood Mac style. We know we have something new, yet it's got the unmistakable Mac sound."

George and Amal Clooney‘s distinct personalities are already starting to show in their kids.

"It was really funny because the little girl was such the essence of her mother and the little boy is the essence of his dad," says Simpson, who has helped other celebrity couples like John Krasinksi and Emily Blunt and Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel.

Last night, Seth Meyers revealed he and wife Alexi Ashe welcomed their second child, son Axel, a day earlier. But this was no ordinary delivery. The newborn made his dramatic entrance in the lobby of the new parents' apartment building.
"I called 911 and over the course of a minute conversation, I said, ‘We're about to have a baby — we're having a baby — we had a baby,' " the talk show host recounted.
The couple joins a growing list of parents — including the wife of Midland's Jess Carson who welcomed their son in a parking lot — who first met their babies in the most random, unexpected (read: not in a hospital or at home) places.
Here, we break down those straight-out-of-a-movie moments.
In March 2018, Candace Howes and her husband Zack were en route to the hospital when the expectant mom started pushing, prompting the couple to pull over and call 911 when they were a mile away from home. They were told to go to the nearest fire station, which they did.
"I was crowning so I stepped out and then within two steps out and then I got on the ground and pushed the baby out and the fire chief caught him and I rolled over and put him on me," the new mom told Orlando, Florida outlet News 6.

The Mississippi native was visiting her husband, who works in the Florida town. Kayla went into labor before an ambulance came to her aid, and

Diamonds are a girl's best friend, so it's no shocker that Kate Hudson‘s first outing since announcing she is expecting a baby girl was for famed jewelry brand Harry Winston.
The 38-year-old actress helped cut the blue ribbon Tuesday at the House of Harry Winston‘s second retail store in Hong Kong, located inside the Mandarin Oriental hotel.
Although she wowed in a bling-worthy necklace and bracelets from the brand, all eyes were on the glimpse of the star's baby bump beneath her long black gown.
Hudson revealed in a surprise video Friday that she and boyfriend Danny Fujikawa are expecting their first child together and Hudson's third total. She's already mom to sons Bingham Hawn, 6½, and Ryder Russell, 14, but baby No. 3 will be her first daughter.
