A bipartisan bill is looking to end Section 230 protections for tech companies
Lawmakers from opposites sides of the aisle are looking to sunset Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, because it has "outlived its usefulness." House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers and ranking member Frank Pallone, Jr. have released a bipartisan draft legislation introducing their proposed bill, which is seeking to render the provision ineffective after December 31, 2025. In the op-ed piece the lawmakers wrote for The Wall Street Journal, they admitted that Section 230 "helped shepherd the internet from the 'you've got mail' era into today's global nexus of communication and commerce." However, they said that big tech companies are now exploiting the same law to "shield them from any responsibility or accountability as their platforms inflict immense harm on Americans, especially children."

They added that the

Microsoft Places is the new ‘share my location' app for work

You'll probably immediately know if you or your team might be using Places, given that you're already familiar with your company's attitude towards remote work. It's clear that some companies would like to convince their workers to return to the office, while some workers would rather avoid the stress and expense of a commute and work from home.

Places is designed to balance that tension, Microsoft said. First off, the app can be used as a standalone indicator of who will be in the office, and when. But it will also be integrated into both Outlook and Copilot, so you can visually see which team members will be where, or just ask Copilot to sum it all up. Copilot integration will take place during the second half of 2024, Microsoft said.

Microsoft outlined its Places plans in a blog post, with a surprising amount of graphics describing what Places will look like. We've reproduced a few here. Here's what Places will offer:

Location plans: You can set you location for a given period, and check to see whether your coworkers (or your boss) will be in too. A "peek card" sums your plans up.

All ChatGPT users are getting GPT-4 for free with lifelike new model

OpenAI will accompany the launch of the GPT-4o model with a new Mac app that will showcase the capabilities of the new model, which can now "see" the world around it. A Windows app will debut later on. The GPT-4o model can now "see," as well, via vision capabilities that include desktop screenshots as well as the ability to upload video and screenshots from a mobile app — again, just an iPhone app for now.

Perhaps the most intriguing thing about the new ChatGPT app with GPT-4o, however, is that the model now seems far more human in both tone and intonation. For one thing, the model is "real time," which means that you don't have to wait for it to complete its statement before you can jump in and cut it off. The speech synthesis can even harmonize its voices, as well as provide what we could consider to be "normal" conversational interactions, translations, and more. Normal conversations will now have GPT-4 levels of sophistication across the board.

Consider this GPT-4o demonstration, which now incorporates teenager-level sarcasm on demand, below. Consider this a demonstration, however: GPT-4o's new audio and video capabilities are coming in the future, OpenAI said. (You can still "talk" to ChatGPT via the mic app on the Web version of ChatGPT.)

Google's Project Starline video conferencing tech is coming to offices
Google is teaming up with HP to bring its futuristic video conferencing technology Project Starline to enterprise consumers. The company first began demoing this service in 2021 and the first iteration involved a 3D video chat booth with a projection of the person you're talking to. We came away extremely impressed by the holographic technology, remarking on how realistic everything seemed and that the other person seemed to be in the room with you.

However, this technology isn't quite the same as what we tried a couple of years back. Since then, Google has streamlined and simplified the system a fair amount. There's no more video chat booth, as the whole thing has been moved to a system that features a large TV and cameras. This scales back some of the wow factor, but makes it much easier to implement.

To that end, Google and HP will be integrating Project Starline with common video conferencing apps like Google Meet and Zoom. There's no information as to how much it'll cost for companies to sign on to use this technology, or any details regarding the initial setup. Google says more information will be revealed later this year with actual commercialization beginning in 2025.

HP calls it an "immersive collaborati

World's highest-efficiency hydrogen system scales up for mass production
You have to throw some energy away to make hydrogen - typically around 20-30%, even with the best systems, which use around 52.5 kWh of energy to create a kilogram of hydrogen that can store 39.4 kWh of energy. It's a waste of renewable energy, and it contributes to the high cost of a green fuel option that's really struggling to compete against fossils and batteries in many applications.

Google teases new camera-powered AI feature one day ahead of I/O
Google is teasing an intriguing new AI feature one day ahead of its I/O developer conference. The company shared a brief video on X that appears to show a new camera-powered AI feature that's able to recognize what's in the frame in real time.

The video, which is labeled as a "prototype," shows what appears to be a Pixel device with the camera open viewing the keynote stage at I/O. The person holding the camera asks, "hey, what do you think is happening here?"

A voice replies that "it looks like people are setting up for a large event, perhaps a conference or presentation." It's also able to identify the "IO" letters as being tied to Google's developer conference and mentions "new advancements in artificial intelligence." As the two voices go back and forth, a text transcript appears on the screen.
